Last Christmas, I spoke with one of my favorite retailers, who was dealing with an issue at her store. As she wrapped gifts for the building’s owner and superintendent, I asked if she felt upset about being there alone on Christmas Day. Her response stopped me in my tracks: “I’m just happy to be alive.”
That simple, profound statement has stayed with me ever since. Isn’t that what life is all about? Some say that just being alive is like winning the lottery, and the more I reflect on it, the more I believe it.
When I think about what I have the privilege of creating in this world, it often feels like a “pinch me” moment. As the holidays draw near, I encourage my children to reflect on all the gifts—big and small—they’ve been given. I want to teach them the power of gratitude because it shapes everything: how we view the world, how we approach challenges, and how we cherish the people around us.
